From my sketchbook to a baby card (Toca Boca)

Lately, whenever I have free time, I’ve been drawing Toca Boca rooms in my sketchbook.

If you don’t know Toca Boca, it’s an app where you can create characters and design houses however you want — room by room, with all the objects and decorations.

I don’t actually play the app, but I love using it as a reference. Then I recreate everything on paper.

It rained all week here in San Francisco, and on days like that, I can spend hours at my desk. I draw the characters, the rooms, the furniture, then trace everything in black, color it, cut it out, and glue it into my notebook.

Then comes my favorite part: the tiny cut-out pieces you can move around.

Shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, even a little face mask

Cutting all the tiny pieces is really satisfying. And I love that I can keep adding new rooms and slowly grow the house. Flipping through the pages and watching it expand over time might be the best part.

You can watch more rooms on Instagram.

Then I stopped at the baby room and thought… we need a baby card. This could be it!

So I redrew the baby room — several times — until the colors and placement finally felt right. I added a small frame on the wall so each card can be customized with the baby’s name. Then we printed it.

But I didn’t want it to be just a regular card.

I printed and cut out tiny babies and added small paper tabs to the chair so you can slide the baby in and out and “sit” it there.

Once everything was printed, only the cutting was left — my favorite part 🙂

The baby is movable, which makes it the kind of card that might make a big brother or sister smile (and maybe play with it too).

I ❤️ when something I make just for fun in my sketchbook turns into a playful, interactive product.
